Tipo: Sinking Pencil Bait
Ancorine: sold without trebles
Target: Barracuda, Bluefish, Leerfish, Seabass, Dolphinfish, Bluefin Tuna, Amberjack
Profondità di nuoto: variable
This pencil-shaped lure mimics a small needlefish, a basic food for every big predator (bluefish, leerfish, seabass, many tuna species, dolphinfish, barracuda…). The standard 25 g version is sinking and helps the angler chase predators on different stages across the water column while working the sample with several actions and paces.
Don’t get wrong! It’s not a sinking stickbait, nor a jig minnow!
Don Belone’s characteristics don’t look like any other lure specification, so there lies its originality. After using it, the angler’s first impression is that Don Belone is a ‘surface pencil’, the typical lure with which anyone just ‘combs’ the surface by making it run across, splashing water with its mouth and twitching the rod tip to make it look like a troubled fish that catches predators’ attention with its erratic action. That’s very easy with Don Belone and will undoubtedly help you make a difference, but… it goes beyond the usual pencil attributes, because fish don’t always attack under those conditions. If you restrict yourself to that simple action, you are getting less than 50% from Don Belone’s outstanding potential. Let’s speak seriously: if you really want to see how far it goes, don’t compare Don Belone with other lures – Don Belone is Don Belone. Full stop.
Be free, my friend
Besides working it like the typical pencil, why don’t you cast it as far as you are able to, let it sink for some seconds and, twitching the rod tip, make it swim up toward the surface with soft and hard jerks combined with different retrieving speeds? When you bring it close to the surface, do some nice ‘jerk & stop’ for some centimetres with a straight-line retrieval. At that point, many things may happen:
• That you can see –just behind Don Belone– the predator you were after during the whole day, which you thought had already disappeared. Those are normally huge, wary fish.
• That –although you can’t see it– the predator is swimming in ambush at some distance under your lure until the unsuspected moment when Don Belone is spectacularly hit from below.
• That –and this is the most probable thing– the fish doesn’t even let your Don Belone stick its head out of the surface, leaving you paralyzed at the sight of your lure being violently engulfed.
That’s everything Don Belone can offer: a lure that provides fish you had never thought were within reach of a pencil. Don Belone’s appeal spreads from the moment you close your reel pick-up, on any water layer you want.
